Many trees with split trunks, weak unions, or heavy limbs can be stabilized for decades with the right hardware. We assess honestly: cable it, brace it, or remove it.
You’ve got a tree with a problem, two trunks pulling apart at the base, a heavy limb over the roof at a bad angle, or a trunk that split in a past storm. Before assuming it has to come down, it’s worth knowing that cabling and bracing may stabilize it.
Many trees with structural problems can be supported safely for decades with the right hardware installed correctly. Tree Service Smyrna assesses these situations and gives you an honest answer. We don’t push removal when a tree can be saved.

Call now or send a photo — we'll get you an honest price with no pressure.
Two different systems that address different parts of the same problem.
Flexible cables installed between major limbs or trunks to limit movement and redistribute load during wind and storm events. Positioned in the upper third of the crown, at or above the union being supported. Used for co-dominant stems, heavy overextended limbs, or stress on a specific attachment point. Annual inspection is recommended.
Steel threaded rods installed through a split or cracked union to hold it together. Used when a split has begun, when included bark is visible at a fork, or when a V-shaped union is opening under its own weight. More invasive than cabling, but often necessary when the problem is already in progress.
Bracing holds a split together; cabling limits the movement that would worsen it. When both are needed, they're installed as a combined system.
Two or more main stems from the same point with included bark, a weak union under growing stress.
Long horizontal limbs with lever arms that could snap at the attachment point.
A split in a main trunk or major union, often savable if caught in time.
Bark growing inward at a fork, indicating poor structural attachment.
A union that opened during a past storm and hasn't been addressed.
A tree leaning toward your home, car, or a neighbor's property.
Limbs that have failed from this tree during past storms.
We evaluate the tree's overall health, identify structural defects, assess failure potential, and note what's in the target zone below, structures, foot traffic, power lines.
We determine cable positions, rod placement, hardware type, and load path. ANSI A300 Part 3 is the industry standard we use as our reference for system design.
Cables installed using appropriate hardware, eye bolts, J-lags, or synthetic cable systems. Bracing rods installed with proper drilling technique to avoid damaging live wood.
We photograph the installation and can provide a written record of hardware type, position, and installation date for your records or insurance.
We recommend annual inspections to assess hardware condition and adjust as the tree grows. We offer inspection scheduling for established clients.
Cost depends on tree size, access, the number of cables or rods, and hardware type. Compared with removing a large tree ($1,000-$3,000+), cabling is often the more economical path for a healthy-but-compromised tree.
When the tree is otherwise healthy, the structural problem is caught before it becomes a failure, and there's real value in keeping it standing, a mature shade tree, a specimen oak, a privacy screen. A properly installed system can extend a tree's safe life by decades.
When the tree is already dying, disease or root damage has compromised its structure, or the problem has progressed beyond what hardware can safely address. Installing cables in a failing tree addresses the symptom, not the problem.
We don't cable trees just to avoid a harder conversation. If a tree is a genuine liability, we'll tell you. If it's worth saving, we'll tell you that too. The goal is the honest recommendation.
Proper pruning reduces structural stress and can prevent the need for cabling down the road.
When cabling isn't enough, we handle safe, complete removal.
Storm damage to a cabled tree? Call us immediately, day or night.
Same crew, same fully insured standards across every city we serve.
Not sure if your tree needs cabling? We’ll come out and assess it at no charge. You’ll get an honest recommendation, and removal only comes up if it’s actually the right call.
